Emily Herring has been playing and performing music for most of her life. She began playing the guitar at the age of 7 and became a “serious music addict” from ages of 12 and on. Throughout her high school years, Emily immersed herself primarily in Folk, Blues, and Classical music. These interests led her to pursue and earn a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of North Texas in the field of Music Composition. Her studies at UNT however, lead her away from the conventional collegiate pursuits of Jazz and Contemporary Classical composition and brought her to a deeper understanding of the rich music and culture that are so much a part of Texas: Country, Folk, Blues, Tejano, and the occasional Polka.
Living in the middle of Texas’ most musical small town, Denton, was a blessing in disguise; it proved to be a turning point. Denton’s thriving music scene introduced Emily to music’s underground community of Punk, Rockabilly, Ska, Funk, etc. Soon Emily began to perform more and more outside of the music school idiom and she began playing regularly at Denton’s own Mabel Peabody’s.
Upon graduation, she felt it was time to leave Texas behind for a while and make a new start in Portland,Oregon. The move to Portland managed to further cement her love for the music of fellow Texans such as Robert Earl Keen, Lyle Lovett, Rosie Flores, Willie Nelson, Selena, Mance Lipscomb, Big Mama Thornton, and many more. So, it was in Portland that Emily began to perform Country and Blues almost exclusively. Portland also brought about an opportunity for her to perform outside of her idiom with the popular all girl dance-punk band Drastic Plastic. However, as the popularity of the band began to grow, Emily saw her solo career begin to take a backseat. After two years with the group, she reluctantly decided to leave it to exclusively pursue her solo project.
She began recording her first full-length CD, "My Tears Will Be Relieved", in November of 2004. Over the years, Emily has had the opportunity to share the stage with many underground favorites such as The Juanitas Family, Marisa Anderson (now Emily’s part-time drummer), Mirah, Tami Hart, The Haggard, Pom Pom Meltdown, Bonfire Madigan, Tracy and the Plastics, David Dondero, and many more. When she’s not playing music, Emily has been teaching at the Rock n Roll Camp for Girls, writing articles for an Encyclopedia of Popular Music with Dr. Frank Hoffman of Sam Houston State University, and working in a home for at-risk teenage youth.
