Our Story:

The band has avoided categorization and trends to become a completely independent musical force with which to be reckoned. Their first eponymous self-released album moved over 7,000 copies from the stage alone and landed them on internationally distributed compilations, a NPR special, and the soundtrack to critically acclaimed director John Sayles’ film Casa de los Babys. Their explosive live performances have packed some of the most reputable venues in the US and Mexico on word of mouth and industry hype alone, and the band has shared the stage with musical legends such as Los Lobos, Flaco Jimenez, Patti Smith, KRS-One, and Barbarito Torres from Buena Vista Social Club. Talks with major and independent labels and producers came and went, but the band opted to continue their methodology of DIY ethics. The importance of complete creative control over their new product was paramount. Stuart Sullivan (Willie Nelson, Sublime, Butthole Surfers) was recruited to engineer, and Carl Thiel (Robert Rodriguez, Kill Bill II) was brought in to handle the mixing process. Special guest artists featured on the album include Raga El, who introduces the band in classic dancehall style, Tejano music legend Ruben Ramos (Los Super Seven), and DMC champion DJ Baby G, who contributed to a track on Fantasma’s first album. Grupo Fantasma represents a new generation of musicians who can reference slick Quincy Jones era production AND the grittiness of the Beastie Boys’ “Check Your Head.” The band has successfully busted all barriers and cliches that often plague the current Latin music market, all the while keeping their feet firmly planted in the traditions that they respect and revere.
