Dualtone Music Group is proud to announce the completion of DRESSED IN BLACK, a star-studded salute to the extraordinary legacy of Mr. John R. Cash (who earlier this year celebrated his 70th birthday).
Due in stores September 17th, co-producer Dave Roe has put together a live celebration of this wonderful recording for Thurs., Sept. 26 at 12th & Porter, 123 12th Ave. N., 256-5683. Artists participating to date, include Roe and co-producer Chuck Mead, Billy Burnette, Rosie Flores, Eddie Angel, DamonBramblett, Earl Poole Ball, Kenny Vaughan, Redd Volkaert, Raul Malo, James Invtveld, Chris Knight and Robbie Fulks.
DRESSED IN BLACK: A Tribute to Johnny Cash presents passionate readings of 18 of Cash's signature tunes that underscore both the breadth and depth of Cash's creative genius as well as the enormous influence his towering presence has had --and continues to exert- -on the face and shape of the American culture. In a kind of "Six Degrees (or less) Of Separation," evidence of country music's long, snaky roots and
intertwined cross-pollination abound on this sterling compilation.
Hank Williams III, whose revered grandpappy's torch was effectively
picked up by Cash nearly a half-century ago, delivers the kick-off. Rockabilly filly Rosie Flores has kept Wanda Jackson's candle burning bright, golden-throated Raul Malo's Mavericks were the "house band" for TNT's 1999 "All Star Tribute To Johnny Cash," Rodney Crowell was Johnny's son-in-law, Billy Burnette's daddy and uncle were rockabilly co-pioneers with Cash--as was Ronnie Dawson, for whom Los Straitjackets' Eddie Angel served as guitar-slinger.
Earl Poole Ball has tickled the ivories for Cash and Buck Owens (as well as with such country-rock ground-breakers as "Sweethearts..."-era Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers and Michael Nesmith's First National Band), Red Volkaert's been a long-time top-hand in Merle Haggard's posse, and Kenny Vaughan has long been a Music City first-call for six-string muscle.
Dale Watson, Bruce Robison, Kelly Willis, Robbie Fulks and BR549's Mead all have been at the vanguard of the classic country renewal for nearly a decade, songbird MANDY BARNETT, JAMES INTVELD, Damon Bramblett and Chris Knight carry on the great tradition of Americana-based singer/songwriters. As for the Rev. Horton Heat, well, he's been wallowin' in his own personal ring of fire since before he was ordained...
On DRESSED IN BLACK, it all comes together as classic roots, savvy vets and bold, soulful young lions collide to make joyful sounds in the humble, righteous Church of Johnny Cash
