Our Story:

The goal for this ensemble was to present and perform for concerts, HS clinics and various festivals. The goals also became broader, as to not only focus on transcriptions from the 30’s and 40’s, but to venture out and create new works in the contemporary mainstream arena. With schooled writers as Wallarab, Buselli and now the addition of composer-arranger, Kerry Strayer, the organization has broadened it’s goals to partnering with more national artists, commitment to recording projects in the next 3 years with various artists, and seeking professional representation to perform abroad.
The organization has to this point separated it’s name to allow it’s audience to know which repertoire it’s performing. The Uptown Society Orchestra focuses on Jazz Classics. The Little-Big Band focuses more on new works. All of this library is owned and maintained solely by Dr. Richard Holland. Holland has donated some of this commissioned work to SUNY-Oswego for it’s exclusive ownership for the enhancement of Jazz education.
In July, 2005, the Little Big Band recorded it’s first CD, produced by Bill Dobbins. This band focused on new works created by Dobbins, Kerry Strayer, Brent Wallarab and Jim Martin. Wallarab and Martin recently have been hired by the band to serve as staff arrangers. Our mission was to create new material for a 10 piece ensemble that would allow individuals the room to improvise at lenghth as well as material that would create exciting ensemble passages.The Cd is going to be released in April, 2006, on Blujazz Records
