Our Story:

New Album Featuring ~ "Memories Left at Sea" as heard on Fox's The O.C. also includes "1993" and "Elected". Diderrich has just put the finishing touches on sundayrunners’ debut album for the Chicago indie label Machine Records. The music that unfolds from this collection effortlessly mixes a timeless brand of pop with updated alternative sensibilities. Hailing from a small suburban Wisconsin town known more for music than basketball (hometown of guitar legend and “Wizard of Waukesha” Les Paul), Diderrich’s own musical background began at a young age when his parents encouraged him to play classical piano. This subsequently led to a childhood competition in Milwaukee where the young musician performed at the venerable Pabst Theater on Liberace’s piano. It wasn’t until his teen years though, when he picked up his father’s guitar, that his fate was sealed. Weaned on bands such as Buddy Holly, The Beatles and The Who from his parents, Diderrich later fell in love with the sounds of British metal and in 1988 formed his first band Mas Optica (a progressive metal band that was signed to the Minneapolis indie label Red Decibel.) After six years fronting Mas Optica, Diderrich - who, at that time, was getting more into the alternative sounds of The Pixies, Nirvana and Soundgarden - then joined childhood friends Steve and Gary Vermillion’s Milwaukee-based band Front of Truck as second guitarist. Front of Truck’s songs soon appeared on a number of well known television shows, such as VH1’s Have and Have Nots of Rock & Roll, VH1’s Record Breakers and the hit show Party of Five. Eventually deciding to go their separate ways, Diderrich and the Vermillions then joined musician Kevin Tihista’s band for an extensive U.S. and European tour, before joining Tobin Sprout (Guided By Voices) for a Midwest and East Coast tour (including sold-out shows with GBV.) Fast forward to the fall of 2003 when Randy signs with Machine Records as a solo artist under the guise of sundayrunners. Although sundayrunners is Diderrich’s own brainchild, he’s quick to point out that it really is a collective effort. “My friends really helped with this record,” he readily admits. “I had all these songs together and there’s a few people who helped that I’ve gotten pretty close with over the past couple of years, as well as some (like the Vermillion brothers) that I’ve known for up to twenty years. I’m really lucky to have the opportunity to work with such great people who also happen to be great musicians.” Some of these “great musicians” on the album include brother Rick Diderrich (bass), Mason Brown (guitar & bass), Dan Reinholt (drums), Steve Vermillion (bass), Gary Vermillion (drums), Derek Crawford (drums) and Chad Kovac (keyboards and drums). Engineered by Diderrich and fellow Machine recording artist Todd Bowie, the results of sundayrunners’ debut mix trace elements of the British Invasion sounds that influenced Diderrich in his youth, along with both melodic pop and the best of what alt-rock had to offer at a time when it really mattered. Delivering a wealth of beautifully composed and arranged rock songs, such as “Elected,” “Finally” and “Evolver,” Diderrich proves – with aching vocals over haunting pop melodies, warm harmonies and often delivered with a dry sense of humor – that he stands a lot taller as a musician than he ever will as a basketball player. “I really love the college playoffs,” Diderrich admits, “because most of these guys will never play in the pros, and they play like it’s the last game of their lives. I love watching anyone really go for whatever it is they’re going for.” But despite all of the attention that sports teams receive during the final big games, Diderrich also thrives on the optimistic, ‘this is gonna be our year’ attitude that every team believes at the very start of the season.
